HAM, James Rucker, b. 24 October 1846 DeSoto Co., MS; d. 1 January 1936 Cayce, Marshall County, MS; buried New Salem Cemetery, Cayce, Marshall CO., MS. He served in Company (G), Regiment (D), 18th Mississippi Calvary for the Confederate States of America. He enlisted the Spring of 1863 under General Nathan Bedford Forest, and was in the " Battle of Guntown" (better know by Historians as the Battle of Brices Crossroads), and " Forest's raid into Memphis". He surrendered at Mobil, and marched from Mobil to Columbus, Mississippi. He was paroled at Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee, April 1865, and refused to take the oath of allegiance to the United States Government. Pamela Sutton Hazen
