Henry Felix & Elizabeth Burrus Irwin Cook Bible Record
Vicksburg, Warren Co., Ms.

Note: In 1803, Foster Cook s/o William Cook and Elizabeth Rives ,and
native of Va., arrived by keel boat on Coles Creek, Jefferson Co., Ms.  In this
party with him were kinsmen Edwin, John and Alexander Cook ,his aunt, Mrs.
Newit Vick ,Mr. Vick and his three brothers.  Foster had married early Elizabeth
White and at this time they were the parents of a baby girl.  He had taught school
before coming to the Natchez Country; now he was to become a surveyor.
He made his settlement on the south fork of Coles Creek, within a few
miles of the Newit Vicks.  Life on the frontier was rugged - we cannot imagine
their hardships, anxieties, or day-to-day existence.  But those hardy souls
were made of sterner stuff than are today's breed.  After a short stay in Ms.,
during which time another daughter was born, his wife died; he returned to
Greensville Co., Va. and married Martha Wych Sills and brought her back to his
wilderness home in Ms.  Alexander Cook ,his nephew, likewise went back to
Greensville Co. for his bride, in 1811.
Up to this time, the settlements in the extreme northern section of the
Old Natchez District had been mostly south and southeast of the Walnut
Hills (Later named Vicksburg).  This was because the northern portion bordered, on
the east and north, the great Indian Wilderness.  In 1814, the Cooks - Foster,
Edwin, John and Alexander - located and claimed a tract of land seven miles
northeast of the Walnut Hills.  Cane and undergrowth had been burned off by the
Indians, and appropriately called "the Open Woods".  This same year the Cooks
and Vicks moved their families from Jefferson Co. to settle this tract.
