Luke Patrick Cemetery - Rankin Co., Ms. (1961)
Note: This family cemetery is located 10 miles south of Pelahatchie,
near
the New Prospect Metho. Ch. and the Bethel Presby. Ch. It was
originally on the
Patrick plantation. It is now called the "Walters Grove Cemetery"
being
named for the pioneer Walters family that settled near here.
Only 2 stones are standing now, but there are indications of several
other graves having been there. The field in which it is located
is
overgrown with high grass. The 2 stones are tall, thin marble
slabs, which was
typical of those used at that time. It is thought that these
2 graves were the
first in the family cemetery on this pioneer home site. Negro
slaves are buried
nearby. The Antioch Baptist Church, 2 miles away, is over 100
years old.

Smith - Cooper Cemetery - Rankin Co., Ms. T4N R2E Sec 27
Location (1959): south of Dry Creek - Florence road in the Compere -
Boteler
pasture about 1/2 mile, 4 1/2 miles east of Florence
Note: This cemetery was once part of the homestead of Charles S. Smith
,who
bought the land from the US government in 1840. It remained in
the Smith
family for many years. Charles S. Smith and many of his descendants
are
buried here.
This family burial plot was neglected and forgotten for many years.
In 1944 Oliver Franklin Cooper, a descendant, bought the land from
the owners
at that time and in March of that year, had the deed recorded as a
public
cemetery in the Cancery Clerk's off, Brandon, Ms.
The Smith's originally came to Rankin
Co. from N.C. ,by way of Ala.
and the Cooper's came from Chester Co., S.C. A Mr. White ,a pioneer
settler,
was the first to be buried there about 1825; then followed the Smiths,
Cooper,
Harper and Boehle - all related through descent or marriage.

Note: An old abandoned Mountain Creek Cemetery 1 mile east of the present
location contains Herringtons, Suttons, Prices and probably many others,
some graves more than 100 years old. The early graves were marked
with cedar
markers. The history of Mountain Creek can be found in Clinton,
Ms. in the
vault of Ms. College.
Another cemetery more than 100 years
old is 10 miles out of Star in
front of Milton Ball's home. Guynes and Mulligans are buried
there but there are
no headstones.
