This Bible is in extremely bad condition
and the records are written
in pencil on the inside front cover and first four pages. The
writing on these
pages is unfortunately very faded, almost to the point of being unreadable.
The story behind this Bible's condition
is as follows: The owner,
James
Ellison Foster was, in his elderly years, a widower, and his housekeeper
brought her children to the house and allowed them to ransake and tear
up
his
valuable library of books, including this Bible. contrary to
many family
Bibles, theis one is rather small, about the size of a normal paperback
book
only much thicker.
The owner, James Ellison Foster, was
a very prominent farmer and
landowner in the Stronghope - Beaver Dam area near Wesson, Ms.
The son of
Joseph Allen Foster (24 Feb, 1824 - 29 Dec, 1898) and Palentine Crawford
,he
was the first millwright and owned the first telephine in the area.
For a
while there was a "Foster" post office at the mill.
Off all the children born to James Ellison
Foster (8 Nov, 1850 -12 Jy,
1932) and Martha Ann Hoggatte / Hoggatte (25 Jan, 1851 -14 Jan, 1909)
only
one
is presently (1974) living: Mrs. mattie (Martha) L. Foster Hynum, 502
Anita
St., space 64, Chula Vista, Ca. 92011 and she is the present owner
of her
father's Bible. J. E. Foster, his wife M. A. Foster, and many
of his
descendants are buried in the Stronghope Baptist Church Cemetery southwest
Rockport, Copiah Co., Ms.
