Smith Cemetery

Transcribed by Thomas Richard Plunkett on 15 Jan 2003

Location: Southeast from intersection of Hatley-Detroit Road and Greenwright Road upon a quite high and "rough going" hill.

There is only one marked grave at Smith Cemetery which is abandoned and overgrown. There are probably several unmarked graves but no evidence could be located for them. The one marked grave is a double tombstone which reads:

DAVID R SMITH
BORN DEC.27 1848
DIED JAN.16 1905

MARTHA E SMITH
BORN SEPT.12 1847
DIED MAR.27 1901

There are other persons buried at this cemetery, but their graves are lost. Family tradition recalls that in about 1928 a child of John Henry and Mossie (Thornton) Plunkett was buried there in a shoe box. It was probably a stillborn child. If you know of other persons buried here or if you have any knowledge of a vandalism at this cemetery somewhere in the late 1940s or early 1950s, please contact the Monroe County MSGenWeb coordinator.
