Bobby Pickle or Ray Cemetery

Recorded by Greg Green

Location: The cemetery is located in Monroe County, Mississippi approximately 5.5 miles from the intersection of US Highway 17 North and Lamar County Highway 35 (a.k.a. Lost Creek Road). In Mississippi, Lamar County 35 becomes the Sipsey Fork Road. Approximately one mile from the state line take a right off Lost Creek Road onto Beard Road and proceed about 100 yards to the Earl Black Road. Take a right onto this gravel road and the first and second roads to left will take you up to the cemetery.

Description: The Bobby Pickle Cemetery is on a small flat on the side of a wooded hill. It is thought that this hill was the site of the home of Robert Pickle. The cemetery is surrounded by a sort of a U-shape boundary of hardwoods. Within the confines of the cemetery fifty-seven graves were inventoried in the summer of 1996. Of this total, eighteen were identified with a marker bearing the name of the person. The remaining graves are marked with sandstone or brick headstones and foot markers.

Correlation with Early Inventory: In 1938 the Monroe County cemeteries were inventoried. In this inventory there were ten graves listed for the Bobby Pickle Cemetery. I was able to find seven of the ones listed in the 1938 inventory. The following is a list of persons/graves from the 1938 inventory that could not be located:

1) Susan Pickle: In the inventory she was list as having a date of death as August of 1828.

2) Henry Pickle: In the 1938 inventory he is noted as not having a tombstone.

3) Sallie Pickle: In the 1938 inventory she is noted as not having a tombstone.

Conclusion: The Bobby Pickle or Ray Cemetery contains the a total of fifty-seven identifiable (mounded and marked) graves, of which only eighteen bear the name of the person buried in the grave. The oldest grave is most likely the grave of Robert Pickle. Graves at this cemetery, both known and unknown, are still decorated on the third Sunday in May, so it may still be possible to identify some of the unknown graves.

Comments, corrections, and information are welcomed.
