Generation No. 1

1.MOSES3 VENABLE(JOHN2, JOSEPH1)1 was born December 09, 1808 in Kentucky1, and died Abt. 1858 in Lafayette Co, Miss1.He married RHODA GIBSON1 Abt. 1836 in Henry Co, Tenn1.She was born November 17, 1818 in Kentucky1, and died September 30, 1901 in Oxford, Lafayette Co, Miss1.

Notes for MOSES VENABLE:

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 4, Ed. 1, Tree #3875, Date of Import: Apr 20, 2001]

Notes from Neil MacLean Bowie:At the age of 22, ca. 1830, Moses moved with his

parents from Kentucky to Henry Co, Tenn.He appears at age 32 with his wife

and young daughters, near his father, John, in the 1840 census of Henry Co,

Tenn.

About 1844, Moses moved his family near the Tallahatchie River and the

town of Wyatt(near present-day Harmontown), in Lafayette Co, Miss, where he

owned and farmed 440 acres. The family grew large and prospered.

Living nearby in the 1850 census was a James Venable, who evidently

preceded Moses to Mississippi(probably a cousin or uncle to Moses), and his

wife, Rachel.Rachel was reportedly Rachel Mitchell(b. ca. 1811, Ky), the

daughter of Wyatt Mitchell, a land speculator for whom the town of Wyatt, Miss

was named in 1837.James died in 1848, and had Wyatt M. (Mitchell?) Redding(m.

15 Nov 1844, Mary Davis, died 1878, Grn A-34) as the executor of his estate.

Beneficiaries included M.S. (Moses?) Venable.James and Rachel had children

that included a son James and daughter Cynthia (b. ca. 1832, Ky).In the 1850

Miss. census for Lafayette Co, Rachel and Cynthia appear to be living with the

family of S. Spruce, and on the next farm are W.W. Redding, age 26, his wife

who is interestingly named "Gabrilla", age 19, and their daughter, Melissa, age

1.

Moses died ca. 1858, and Rhoda managed the farm. The Civil War, however,

devastated the Venable family and destroyed the Venable wealth. Two of Moses'

sons fought for the Confederacy and were killed in the Battle of Shiloh. After

Shiloh, some 128,000 Union soldiers moved through Lafayette Co on their way to

Vicksburg, and they ravaged the estate of Moses Venable taking possessions and

livestock. They burned Oxford and committed depredations throughout the

county.
