Reference Books and Lookup Volunteers

If you own any Lafayette County Mississippi books, whether listed or not, and will do look-ups, please let Gene Phillips know. As you can see, lookup volunteers are needed. We also need people to record cemetery transcriptions and mappings. Anyone who has any free time at all to dedicate to the preservation and research of our cemeteries will be welcome.

Lookup requests should be limited to one name, or perhaps two if it is a married couple. Information given will be minimal, for example if it is a cemetery lookup, the information will be the name of the cemetery and the dates on the headstone. Please do not ask for "everybody with X surname" or an entire family group, or for hardcopies to be mailed; the volunteers have been asked not to comply with such requests. Our lookups will extend to searching the book to determine if the book would be helpful to you in your research. Should the book prove useful, we can provide the authors' address and ordering information.

Feel free to request a look-up directly from the following resources. Please limit your request to one name per request. Please put LAFAYETTE COUNTY LOOKUP in the subject line of your request to insure the message is not overlooked or accidentally deleted . In the first line of the message please put the name of the book or resource from which you are requesting the lookup. On census records, please do not say all the "SMITH" families on the census - be specific and say the "John SMITH" family. Give the page number or family number if at all possible. For the direct lookup requests, please do not ask for the volunteers to research an entire family tree.

If you request a lookup, don't forget to thank your volunteer for their time.
