This cemetery was part of "Colonel Samuel Ragland Plantation" near the Old Delay Community.
Colonel Samuel Ragland was the one upon learning of Grant's invasion, left his command with PEMBERTON'S CALVARY and rushed into Oxford to warn the residents of Grant's approach. "He and several other La Fayette County citizens loaded all the city and county records onto a wagon and carried the valuable documents to RAGLAND'S Plantation near the Yocona River. ...
A group of former slaves heard rumors there were possible more valuables than paper records in this vault , decided to rob it and steal whatever teasures it held.
They succeed in entering the house but were discovered by the Colonel who attempted to stop the Negros.
The Negros overpowered him and beat him to death . Mrs Ragland also fell vitcum and was slain. " source: "The Oxford Eagle" taken from An Article written by Ellis Byers in the Winter 1966, of the "Mississippi Magazine".
This article is very incorrect, Colonel Ragland was not slain , he managed to fight off the intruders and sound the alaram. A posse was formed , they quickly ran down the blacks near the Yocona river. There they processed to hang them and threw their bodies into the river.
Colonel Ragland married again and sired a son. All are buried in this cemetery.

It is 1/10 of a mile from the Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church on Lafayette County Road 445. It now has a county maintained road leading to it. Look for a county road on the right as you approach the bridge from Delay , just pass the Rock Hill M B Church and cemetery , follow this gravel road until you sight the dead end gate, look to your left and you will see the cemetery off the road.

This cemetery lies on a ridge and contains three "rows". It appears to have been restored, many markers appear to be a newer style than the 1800s or early 1900s.
It appears there may be more graves than are marked.

The Lafayette County Historical and Genealogical Society indexed this cemetery in 1978 and found evidence of 73 graves, I found 53 tombstones (10 doubles) and 63 graves, there seems to be 10 sandstone marked graves missing. It is apparent when viewing each row that there are empty spaces where graves should be. The grass most likely hid these markers from me. I have been back three times retaking pictures. As I stated above, there have been new monuments placed since the 1978 indexing by the SHGS.

Ragland Cemetery 1978 Index Pgs. 177, 178, 179 SHGS Cemetery Records Vol 1.
Remember, I read all three rows from north to south, SHGS reader read row 1 from north to south, row 2 from south to north and row 3 from north to south. See the SHGS Book page to buy the Cemetery Records 1 and 2. They are working on the new cemetery books.
