Bowles Family of Lafayette County

Submitted by Annette Bowen.

On 24 April 1836, Green B. Boles (sic) of Hardeman County, Tennessee, purchased from Joseph Caruthers of Marshall County, Mississippi, two sections of land in Lafayette County, Sections 28 and 29 in Township 7 Range 2 West. On 9 May 1837, Green Bowles of Lafayette County purchased the south half of Section 31 Township 7 Range 2 West. On 1 May 1837, his father James E. Bowls (sic) of Lafayette County purchased Section 6 Township 8 Range 2 West and Section 12 Township 8 Range 3 West of Basis Meridian of the Chickasaw Cession. These deeds are the earliest records of this family in Lafayette County, Mississippi.

A few years earlier these men had sold their land in Bedford County, Virginia, and had moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee, apparently waiting for the lands of the Chickasaw Cession to be opened up. Two daughters, Mary, who had married William Miller, and Theresa, who had married John Jackson Polk, a cousin of Pres. James K. Polk, remained in Tennessee, while the rest of the family moved on to Lafayette County, Mississippi. Those arriving in Mississippi included James E. Bowles and his wife Nancy, Green Berry Bowles and his wife Mary Robert (Harwell), James H. Bowles, Catharine and her husband John S. Hurt, Oscar Pinkney Bowles, Etheldred M. Bowles, and Simon Bolivar Bowles. Within ten years James, his wife, three sons, and a son-in-law had died, yet their spouses, children, and grandchildren remained, continuing to operate large plantations in Lafayette County.
