Fannie Knight Family

Frances "Fannie" "Fan" Knight was the daughter of Rachel (a slave of John "Jackie" Knight) and Jesse Davis Knight (son of John "Jackie" Knight). She was born March 18, 1864 in Jones County, MS. She died May 8, 1916 in Jones County, MS. Fannie married 1st to George Madison "Mat" Knight (see Marriage Bond). George "Mat" was born 24 Mar 1859 (son of Newton Knight & Serena Turner). He married 2nd to Frances Martha Smith (daughter of John A. & Cassandra Knight). Frances had a previous marriage to Samuel G. Smith.


MARRIAGE BOND

Know all men by these presents, that we G. M. Knight and Newton Knight of the County of Jasper, and State of Mississippi, are held and firmly bound unto the State of Mississippi in the [penance] sum of tow hundred dollars, current money of the United States of America, which payment, well and truly to be made and performed, we and each of us, do hereby bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents.

Witness our hands and seals, this the 19th day of December A. D. 1878.

The condition of this obligation is such, that, whereas application had this day been made to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the County of Jasper, and Sate aforesaid, for the granting and issuing of license for the marriage of G. M. Knight and Fanny Knight. Now, therefore, if these shall be no lawful cause to obstruct the marriage for which this license is granted, then this obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and effect.

You or either of you are hereby authorized to solemnize the Rites of Matrimony between G. M. Knight and Fanny Knight and join them together as man and wife in the holy state of wedlock; your official certificate whereof you are to return together with this License, into the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of said County, within the time prescribed by law.

In virtue of the above License the Rites of Matrimony between G. M. Knight and Fanny Knight was duly celebrated by me on the 22 day of December 1878.

Fannie married 2nd to Dock Howze. Dock might be Native American. In the 1880 Jasper Co., Ms Census a child Dock age 18, listed as Indian, is living with his parents "Lewis & Milly Indian." In 1916 a Benson Howze is listed in the 1916 Death Index for Jones Co., MS. Is this Dock?

Fannie and George moved to Colorado with the Mormans and two of her children were born in Colorado: Gailie and Letha. In the 1900 Jasper County, Mississippi census, Fannie is listed with some of her children. She is listed as widowed.

Children of Fannie Knight & George Knight are:

  1. Henry Knight born Feb 19, 1881. Died March 8, 1953 in Lauderdale County, MS Married 1st to Susan Ella Smith (daughter of Warren Smith & Lucy Ainsworth). Married 2nd to Mary Catherine Graves (daughter of Claiborne Graves and Jennie Bruce).

  2. Martha Ann S. Knight born Septemer 20, 1882. Died August 3, 1950. Married John Musgrove (son of Mat Musgrove and Rose Holifield) on 09 Mar 1896, Jones County, MS. Married 2nd to Wash Moffett.

  3. William Gailie. Knight born 10 Apr 1884 in Colorado. Died Jan 1970 in Port Arthur, TX Married 1st Baura Chatman in Greene County, MS. Married 2nd Millie Jane Knight daughter of John Howard Knight and Candace Smith.

  4. Alletha Knight born October 15, 1886 in Colorado. Died Nov 1979 in Port Arthur, TX. Married Daniel “P. D.” Williams. Daniel died March 5, 1938 in Port Arthur, TX.

  5. George Monroe Knight born 29 May 1889. Died 15 April 1957 in Beauregard Parish, LA. Moved to DeQuincy, Calcasieu Parish, LA changing surname to McKnight.

  6. Fred Norton Knight born 01 Feb 1890. Died 28 Sep 1923 in Ellisville, Jones County, MS under suspicious circumstances after threats from KKK. Married a school teacher named Mary Elizabeth Wilson.

  7. Claudie J. Knight born June 1892. Died 03 May 1916

  8. Rachel Dorothy Knight born April 1894. Died June 26, 1923 in Jones County, MS. Married Peter Castleberry.

  9. Walter Knight born 1897. He died April 3, 1898.
