With his ship under terrific enemy shellfire, Freeman calmly remained at his station in the maintop and skillfully piloted the ships into the bay. He rendered gallant service throughout the prolonged battle in which the rebel gunboats were captured or driven off, the prize ram Tennessee forced to surrender. His name was Meredith Adelbert Seward and his wife was Florence Mabel Rea Seward. They were originally from Iowa having lived for a while in Missouri. The children pictured are Velma, Lillian, Florence and Harry. Harry Seward was born during the family's stay in Missouri in 1910. He lived in Tanner Williams (northeast Jackson Co.) until his death in 1994. Seward Farms is still an active farm in Jackson Co.
