He supposedly left a wife and children in Tenn. and came to teach school in the Salem or Fairview communities in Itawamaba Co. I haven't been able to find him in census records from 1850 to 1880. He had two sons James Verny and Vaston. Verny was born in 1871 and married Nodie Tolue Jones. Any info will be greatly appreciated and I'll happily share any I have. BAKER, CHAFFIN Jessie Ruth (Green) Sturdivant Nov 30, 1997 22:25 - In 1860 census, my g-g-grandparents, William J. Baker andMartha R. (Chaffin) Baker were in Itwamba Co, MS. William's father, James, and Martha's parents, William and Sarah (Jones) Chaffin were also there. All these families were in Georgia in prior censuses. In 1870 census, William and Sarah Chaffin were in Blount Co, AL, with the children of William J. & Martha (Sarah Ann Rebecca,Mary J., and Thomas). William Chaffin petitioned the court for guardianship of these minor children; therefore, I am led to believe that perhaps the children's parents were deceased. I have been unable to find them after 1860. Could William J. have died in the Civil War? The list of Itawambians in the War (on this web site) does not list him; however, I have found where a William J. Baker, age 27 years was mustered in 14 Nov 1861 in Iuka, MS, for 12 months -- Roddy's Company, 4 Battalion, Mississippi Cavalry. (age 27 in 1861 would coincide with my William J. Baker's age/born 1834 GA).Does anyone have access to newspapers or another source which mighthave information on this couple, and would be willing to look up for me? I appreciate any help.
