Abel Byrd Stephens was born 14 December 1817 in Alabama, the son of Zachariah (born 8 February 1787 SC, d. 2 October 1881 in Itawamba County) and Tabitha Powell Stephens. He was a grandson of John Stephens and Francis Byrd. Abel married Anna Lawson (born January 1823 in Tennessee), daughter of Amos Banks and Elizabeth Hughes Lawson about 1840 in Alabama. The Stephens family came to Itawamba County during the 1840s and were planters in the rich Twenty Mile Bottom area of Itawamba County near present-day Mantachie.
Green Zachariah Stephens, son of Abel Stephens and wife Anna Lawson Stephens was born during May of 1853 on the Stephens plantation in Itawamba County.
