Co. F organized in Lexington and it is believed that most of the company were Holmes Countians, but no company roster has been found. The 3rd regiment formed part of the Minute Men who were organized in the Spring of 1862. These companies enlisted for a period of six months, but Capt. Kyle's company remained in service for the duration of the war. In September of 1863 the regiment is listed as one of those who participated in the defense of Vicksburg. As part of the 3rd regiment under Col. McGuirk, the company served in General Gholson's Brigade, which often operated under the command of General Forrest. It was one of the units that chased General Sooy Smith back to Memphis after the Battle of Bryce's Crossroads. Co. F, along with the remainder of the regiment became part of the Confederate Provisional Army on 1 May 1864. The 1st Miss. Cav. Regiment was also known as Wirt Adam's Regiment.

Cobb's Scouts were one of the four companies of scouts which operated under the direct command of General N.B. Forrest. Scouts in Forrest's command are generally regarded as the most reliable and able of any in the Confederate Army. Their intelligence work was so good that when Forrest stormed through Memphis in that famous raid that he knew precisely at which houses and hotels that the federal officers were living. Their work enabled Forrest to move his entire army through the middle of occupied territory on several occasion without being detected by the Yankees.Harvey's Scouts were organized as a detachment of men taken from Wood's and Starke's regiments of Wirt Adams' Cavalry. It became an independent company of scouts under Gen. W.H. Jackson on 1 June 1864 at Cave Springs, Georgia. Captain Addison Harvey of Canton who was related to the Harvey family of Richland commanded the company. This probably accounts for the large number of Holmes Countains in the organization. Exceptionally daring, and superbly led, this band of forty scouts harassed Sherman from Jackson to Meridian in July- Aug. 1863. During this campaign General S.D. Lee commended the group for killing and capturing four times their own number. The only part of the Confederate Cavalry that remained around Meridian while Sherman torched the town, Harvey and his scouts killed or captured 130 men, and captured two wagon and 47 horses. Lt. Thomas Land, Wm. C. Bates, Thomas Field, Alfred Land, John Morrow, and William Tucker of Holmes County were among those killed.
