Barnes, Lewis, Bradley    September 15, 2008

I am interested in the web site especially from the assistance of the name Pack Ellen Pack. I am in search of the grave of Milton John Barnes who was married to 1 a Jane S. Lewis 2 Leila Bradley. We can not find the grave of neither Milton John Barnes (1847 – 1926) nor the grave for Jane S. Lewis.  MJ as he was know as died in Archer Co. Texas (Dundee) My grandmother said upon his death he was shipped back to Mississippi, probably to be by his first wife. Jane S. Lewis Barnes probably died in 1885-1887.  I talked with a relative some years ago and she said that the relatives (Cook/Barnes) were buried in cemetery just of road in Byram. Not sure if Old or new Bryam.  Neither MJ nor Jane are in Dundee so suspect in Hinds or Edwards since the Hemphills and Cooks had a plantation there.
Any assistance will greatly be appreciated.
Thanks,  Dennis

I am doing my family's genealogy and trying to follow up on a court case.  An MDAH researcher said their records reflect "no ruling" on the case.  I first found the information in "Mississippi Court Records, From the Files of the High Court of Errors and Appeals, 1799-1859", page 195.  The case is sccj # 5058.  I was also told by MDAH that the case was actually tried in the "Superior Court of Chancery in Jackson, not in the High Court of Errors and Appeals."  This case was shown as occurring in 1852, but could have stretched on to later years.

Here's where it gets complicated....The above case involves a contested will---Jesse(e) S. Miller and wife, Eunice J.C. Miller vs. William A. Baldwin, Exec. Est. Jeremiah Griffin, Dec'd and Lawrence L. Griffin, Admr. Est. Isaac W. Jones, Dec'd.  Apparently, the contested will resulted in the murder of Jesse S. Miller...case
# 613, State of Mississippi vs. John R. Griffin.  I found this documentation in Madison County court file microfilm, but there was a document requesting that the trial be moved to "Holmes County".

I live in Texas and therefore unable to conduct on-site research of the court records.  If you are able to find any further information on case "sccj 5058", or "613", I would be most appreciative. Thank you, Paula Knape

CARTER,  TAYLOR,  BREWER         September 9, 2005
Alexander CARTER married Darcus TAYLOR in Hinds Co in Hinds Co in 1831.  His father was Thomas CARTER who died 1855 and is buried in Copiah Co.
Darcus's father was Thomas B Taylor and her mother was Olivia BREWER, daughter of George BREWER of Hinds Co. Thomas B TAYLOR moved to TX about 1836.  George BREWER probably died in Hinds Co, but a lot of the BREWERs moved to TX also around 1840.  Alexander and Darcus TAYLOR CARTER moved to TX about 1854.
I would love to exchange information with anyone about the above families. They had some connection to the WADE and STOVALL families, also.

SIMS, ANDERSON    September 9, 2005
I am researching the family of Augustus Sims and Isabella Anderson Sims. They lived in the Auburn/Newman/Edwards area of Hinds County 1840-1907.  Augustus
was born to a slave but his father was white. I am trying to find the names of his parents.  My research has hit a "brick wall."  There is no 1870 census for the Auburn PO.  I checked the original Hinds County book at the National Archives in Washington, DC.  Augustus had at least one sister Elmira Sims Bolling.
I am looking for any other "half" siblings Augustus may have had. My grandmother told me that she was in town with her father once and saw her father nod and acknowledge a man she believed was her father's white brother.  My grandmother also said that we are of Scottish decent.  At his death Augustus left an estate that included 500 acres along the Big Black River, a store that had the mason lodge on the second floor and a cotton gin.  I am looking for help to include a tartan with the kinte cloth in my family quilt.

MADDOX, SLATER     September 9, 2005
I'm looking for information about the Maddox family.  My great-great grandmother Jane Maddox  appears in the 1870 US Federal Census for Hinds County.  The family consists of her sons Basil,  Jesse, John, and William R. Maddox (my great grandfather).  Two others, Jane Brown and Mary Slater (or possibly Hates?), also appear with the family.
Basil and Jessie Maddox, along with their respective families, show up in the 1880 US Federal  Census for Hinds County.  Basil lives in the Forrest (sic) Hill Precinct and Jessie lives in the Byram and Terry District.   Any information about this family would be appreciated.  Additionally, when I look up Forest Hill on Mapquest, I notice a road called Maddox Rd.  Does anyone know the genesis or origin of this street name?  Thanks in advance for your assistance. mmaddox2@houston.rr.com

LONG       August 1, 2005
My query is in regard to the relation of John, Benjamin (of Madison County), and Harry Long. I have a few legal records in which they appear to be related, but no relations are spelled out. The Morman website does give a detailed pedigree for Harry Long. His widow remarried John B. Steger and moved to Harrison Co, TX. I descend from John Long who died intestate in about 184ish. He married Elizabeth Shaw daughter of Duncan & Mary in Hinds. Elizabeth remarried Rev. Lewis Hemphill. Reportedly my John Long was born in Indiana and was a junior.

MILLER, MCGOWAN, BUSH, HICKMAN, HUFF, AND HARPER., Boyte, Wilkinson, Smith, Wardell and Tadlock       March 17, 2005
My Research has reached a BRICKWALL in my search about my Great Grandfather, William James Miller,
Therefore; I am researching the following:
William James Miller, born 1827, married Margaret McGowan on 28 October 1847 in Raymond, Hinds County, Mississippi.  Listed in 1850 Hinds County, Census with Wife, Maria, and two sons, John T. (My grandfather, born 1849), and William R. (age 3 months at time of census, no further information on him).  No further data found on him.  Apparently, he either died between 1850 and 1860 because he is not listed on the 1860 Census.  It is possible that he divorced Margaret and moved to another county or state.
Note: A John Miller born in Virginia and Elizabeth (last name unknown), was found on the 1850 Census, and I am now researching John as a possible connection to William James.

Margaret McGowan, born ca 1828, possibly in Monroe County, Mississippi.  She married William James Miller on 28 October 1847. She was listed on the Hinds County Mississippi Census with William James Miller as Head of Household.  She was listed as wife, Maria, and two sons, John Thomas and (My grandfather, born 1849), and William R. (age 3 months at time of census, no further information on him). Later Census indicate that she was the mother of four sons, John T.; William R. Born 1850; Thomas born ca 1852 and  Robert, born ca 1853.  Note: I have found a James Miller listed as the son of William James and Margaret Miller, but cannot confirm the accuracy. Margaret was the daughter of John Wesley McGowan and Elizabeth (Keziah?).  John Wesley was born ca 1801 in Georgia and died ca 1855 in Hinds County, Mississippi, and Elizabeth was born ca 1811 in South Carolina and died in May 1863 in Hinds County, Mississippi.  I do not know where any of the McGowans were buried.  P!
ossibly in Hinds County, Biloxi, Harrison County, Mississippi.

John Thomas, was born ca 1849 in Raymond (?), Hinds County, Mississippi and died 5 July 1929 in Sylvarena, Copiah County, Mississippi.  He was buried in th Sylvarena Baptist Church Cemetery, of which he was a member.  He married first, Sarah L. (Mattie) Bush, on 6 February 1873, the daughter of Albert Bush and Nancy Rogers.  Mattie was born ca 1856.  He married Second, Laura Frances Hickman on 12 January 1879 in Copiah County, Mississippi.  She died 10 February 1944 in The Beauvoir, Biloxi, Harrison County, Mississippi.  She was 85 years old.
She was the daughter of Francis Marion Hickman and Mary Masa Organ Harper.  Francis Marion Hickman served in Company Bm 36th Infantry Regiment, Mississippi Infantry during the Civil War.  He was killed during the conflict.

I have no further information on the sons of William James and Margaret other than the census information stated above.

Sarah L. (Mattie) Bush, on 6 February 1873, the daughter of Albert Bush and Nancy Rogers.  Mattie was born ca 1856. No further data is available

Laura Francis Hickman on 12 January 1879 in Copiah County, Mississippi.  She died 10 February 1944 in The Beauvoir, Biloxi, Harrison County, Mississippi.  She was 85 years old.

John Robert Miller, son of John Thomas and Mattie Bush, was born 24 August 1873 in Georgetown, Simpson County, Mississippi.  He died 10 June 1955 in Hinds County, Mississippi and is buried in Cedarlawn Cemetery, Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi.  He married Sarah Elizabeth (Betsy) Huff on 26 march 1899 in Lincoln County, Mississippi.  She was the daughter of Bernard Huff and Sarah Wilkinson.  She was born 8 October 1880 in Scott County, Mississippi and died 18 January 1955 in Temple Hospital, Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi.  John Robert was a Veteran of the Spanish American War.

Ida Miller, was the daughter of John Thomas and Mattie Bush.  She was born 30 May 1874 and died 12 July 1950 in Boyte Town, Lincoln County, Mississippi. She married Henry Byte on 12 January 1895 in Boyte Town, Lincoln County, Mississippi. She was buried in Union Cemetery, Brookhaven, Lincoln County, Mississippi.

Andrew Walter Miller,Senior,  Son of John Thomas Miller and Laura Francis Hickman, was born 17 August 1879, in Hazlehurst, Copiah County, Mississippi He married Mary Roberta Wilkinson on 20 November 1910 in Franklin County, Mississippi.  She was born 20 November 1890 in Franklin County, Mississippi.  Andrew Walter and Mary Roberta Wilkinson were buried in Cederlawn Cemetery, Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi.  Mary Roberta was the daughter of James Malcolm Burton Wilkinson and Cora Ann Smith

Andrew Walter Miller, Junior, Son of Andrew Walter Miller Senior and Mary Roberta Wilkinson.  He was born 23 December 1922 in Quintin, Franklin County, Mississippi, He married Mildred (Millie) Wardell, daughter of Karl Thomas Wardell and Maggie Bell Tadlock..

HAWK - HARDIMAN - WORSHAM     March 3, 2005
I am researching John F. Hawk b 1867 Giles Co., TN and his families.  John married 1st 1893 Misseniah  Ann "Missie" Worsham in Giles Co., TN.  Missie was reported to have passed away 30 Oct 1907 in Jackson, Hinds Co., MS.    Children of John and Missie all born in Tennessee were Katie b abt 1894, Betty V b abt 1897,  possibly Melva b abt 1900, and Freeman b abt 1906.  John's parents were John Theophilus and Mary Louisa Hardiman Hawk.
John F. Hawk is back in Giles Co., TN for the 1910 Census with a new wife Amanda b in MS abt 1887.  They were probably married about 1909 in Hinds Co., Mississippi.
John F. Hawk and Amanda have returned to Hinds Co., MS for the 1920 Census.  John, Amanda, and Freeman are listed in Jackson Township 5 Beat 5.  I cannot find John, Freeman, or Amanda Hawk in any 1930 census.
If it is possible I would like to find the Cemetery where Missie is buried.     Did John die before the 1930 census?  If he died is he in the same cemetery as Missie?  Did Amanda Hawk remarry between 1920 and 1930?  Where do I write to obtain this information?  I would also like to find Amanda's maiden name and the date of their marriage.
My family recently discovered an Album where dates of marriages, births, and deaths were documented.  These entries were made by several generations of family members starting about 1840.  John F. Hawk made an entry in the Album probably about 1885 giving his date of birth, and then wrote "When This You See Remember Me".  If we can find John's gravesite my family would like to honor his request to be remembered.   Joe Hardiman

I am trying to find 1849 Declaration of Intention/Naturalization information for my gggrandfather, Solomon Harris.  Information from the  Index to Naturalization Records, Mississippi courts, 1798-1906 includes Proceeding, Date, Court, Volume and Page.  I have not find any film for the record book volume in the Family History Library Catalog. GRAHAM         January 19, 2005
My ancestors were a Gabriel Graham & an Elizabeth Terry, married in Wilkinson County, MS in 1818 (he was 28, she was 18 at the time). They had moved to Hinds County by 1830, where they probably lived out the remainder of their years. They apparently had Graham kinfolk in the area (Hinds), but I'd like to know exactly how Gabriel was related to them.  One person in particular was a Hugh "Fate" Graham, born in Hinds County around 1835. I think he became a pastor sometime during his life. There were others in the area that had been part of a "Scottish caravan" traveling from North & South Carolina toward that area in 1815, and I wanted to see whether or not anybody knows if Gabriel was part of that.   Will someone help me?   Steve J. Canton, Arlington, TX

FRASER, ELLINGSON           November 2, 2004
I am researching the family of George Wallace Fraser, am coming up with more and more unanswered questions, and hope someone out there can help me.
George Wallace was born in Jackson, MS, on February 9, 1878 and from what I understand, the family may already have had  a long history there.
George married a lady named Margretta and they had three daughters (Annye V., Margretta and Loraine), all of whom were born in MS.  The family came to TX about 1919.
I know that Loraine and her husband, Jack ELLINGSON, had a daughter by the name of Georgia, who was married to - I believe - George Frazier.  Back in the 1980s when Loraine died, Georgia was reported in the obituary as residing in Jackson with her husband and two children.  Annye V. was married twice and died without issue, and I am not sure about Margretta.

If anyone knows anything of this family, PLEASE get in touch.  Any help is greatly appreciated. Tanya G. Kloesel

 McNEILL, GOODWIN              June 14, 2004
I'm researching the McNeill and Goodwin families who lived in and around Raymond and Bolton.  Between 1854 and 1860, the members of these two families came to Hinds County from Marlboro Co., SC and various counties in North Carolina, including Richmond Co., Robeson Co., and Cumberland Co.
These families were: John and Virginia Stubbs McNeill (my gg-grandparents), Neal and Emily Goodwin McNeill, Duncan and Permelia Goodwin Wright, William McNeill, Jr., William McNeill, Sr., Daniel and Nancy McCranie McNeill, Francis Gilliespie and Elizabeth Easterling Goodwin, and John and Ann McLaurin Goodwin.
John and Virginia settled four or five miles outside of Raymond.  After the Civil War, they moved into Raymond.  They had five children.  I do not know where John and Virginia are buried.
Neal and Emily Goodwin McNeill built and lived in a house they called "Rosewood". They had 13 or 14 children.  Neal and Emily are buried at Reeves Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
William McNeill, Jr. died soon after moving to Hinds Co.  He spelled his name, "McNeal" and is buried in Bolton Town Cemetery.  I believe he married Rachel McLaurin.
Daniel and Nancy McCranie McNeill lived in Bolton and spelled their surname, "McNeal". Nancy and several of Daniel and Nancy's children are buried in Bolton Town Cemetery. One of their sons, Neal W., served with the 18th MS Infantry during the Civil War and was killed during the Seven Days Battle in Virginia.  After the Civil War, Daniel served as a justice of the peace in Bolton.  During their migration to Hinds County, Daniel kept a journal.  I've only heard about the contents of the journal, but I would love to see a copy of it.
Elizabeth Easterling Goodwin died soon after moving to Hinds Co.  Her husband, Francis Gillespie (Frank), married again - to Ann Mylissa Gray.  Frank and Ann Mylissa are also my gg-grandparents.  Frank served during the Civil War, but was killed in 1866 by an "accidental" shooting.  He is buried in Raymond Town Cemetery.
I have a website with more McNeill and Goodwin information on it, including dates.  The address is:  http://home.earthlink.net/~dfletcher10/mcneill2.html
