Sammy James Davis died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at his home in Edwards. He was 49.

Mr. Davis attended Hinds County Agricultural High School and Utica Junior College. He had worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and numerous construction companies and had been self-employed.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charlie and Sadie Davis; and a grandchild, Sakeita Zandelea Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Christmas Davis of Edwards; his parents, Willie Earl and Louretta Johnson Sr. of Edwards; four sons, Willie Christmas, Sammy Davis Jr. and Javaris Davis, all of Edwards, and Anthony Jones of Utica; four daughters, Melissa Lane of Vicksburg, Valoria Horton of Port Arthur, Texas, and Christine Brookshire and Denetric Davis, both of Edwards; three brothers, Willie Earl Johnson Jr. of Edwards, Robert Johnson of Jefferson, Ga., and Calvin Johnson of Georgetown, Ga.; 18 grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Little Morning M.B. Church in Edwards. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Edwards under the direction of Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.
