John Wesley Butts, 82, retired accountant, died Wednesday at 6:53 a.m., November 5, 2003, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at Lakewood Funeral Home in Jackson. Services are 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park.
 

John Butts was born October 11, 1921 in Hinds County to the late William and Maybelle Ford Butts. John graduated from Hinds Junior College in Raymond in 1940 and enlisted in the United States Navy on August 20, 1942. He graduated Midshipman School at Notre Dame University and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. After his discharge from active duty on January 20, 1946, he graduated from Mississippi Southern College with honors in 1948. After graduation he was employed by Mississippi Products Inc., where he was a member of the Men's Key Club (now known as the Old-timers Club). He later worked for Lawrence Warehouse Systems Inc. as an Account Auditor.

Mr. Butts was preceded in death by his sisters, Vergie Butts Kelly and Pauline Butts Fowler and brother, Marvin E. Butts.

Mr. Butts was a member of Hinds Independent Methodist Church in Raymond during his years of residence in Raymond and became a charter member of St. Matthew's Church after moving to Madison in 1989, where he was a member of the Fellowship Class.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Rodgers Butts; daughter, Ladene Butts Strong and son-in-law Dr. James E. Strong; son, John W. Butts, II. Mr. Butts is also survived by three grandchildren, Amanda (Mandy), Richard and Douglas Strong and several nieces and nephews.
