Old Head
House is Still a Busy Place

Head Hotel--Crystal Springs, Mississippi
On the corner of West Marion and West Railroad Avenues stands the busy clinic of Dr. Loren Breland. Still sometimes referred to as the "Head House," this colonial home was constructed about 1858 of heart pine and was put together with square nails. According to Mrs. Lucy Earl Cook Hastings, her father, G.M. Cook, was one of those who hauled logs from Utica to build the two-story house when he was a very young boy.
The old house was used as a hospital for soldiers wounded at the Siege of Vicksburg during the War Between the States. Dr. George John Daniel Funchess, grandfather of Mrs. Doris Eady, Mrs. Grace Nelson, Mrs. Ruth Powers, and Alton Funchess, was a captain in the Confederate Army and administered aid to the wounded in the makeshift hospital. But some patients were too badly wounded to be saved; among these was Henry Batton, grandfather of the older generation of the Battons today.Note from Jymie: excerpt taken from The Funchess Family A Brief Record of the Funchess Family of Orangeburgh County, South Carolina by Memry Funchess Cleveland, Gainesville, Texas 1987.
