R. A. Patrick was Hinds County Circuit Clerk in 1838

A judgement was won by plaintiff to confiscate goods, chattels, lands, and tenaments including slaves of Hurricane, Moss, and Lindsey by Judge I. R. Nicholson in 1842.  The following slaves were made the settlement for the loan of $5150.00: Adam, Anderson, Jacob, Nancy, Eve, Charles, Little Charles, Harriet, and Sarah.  Surety was set by Thomas Graves, Edwin Moody, and Ira Harris on 31 July 1839.  W. O. Demoss was sheriff of Hinds County, and an agreed judgement for$12,800.32 was reached on 8 July 1841 as part settlement.

At that time, all the aforementioned slaves were given up for sale.  The slaves were living at the Henry R. Moss plantation in Rankin County, and Moss owed $46,589.60 to Richard Davidson, James McNabb, Ethelred May, and William H. Shelton.  Moss's wife Narcissa Anne Moss had property also involved.  The Mosses settled part of their debt with transfer of slaves plus 1240 acres of land in Hinds County, offered for sale at Mt. Salus, plus another 405 acres in Hinds, 59 ½ acres in Hinds, and 60 acres in Hinds.  All parcels were listed as being in the Choctaw District.  They added 4 more slaves to the list in payment: George, age 26, Lewis, age 24, Flora, age 45, and Lydia, age 24.

Then an agreed judgement was made in the Town of Jackson and the City of Natchez by H. K. Moss and N. A. Moss (his wife), William H. Shelton, J. Y. McNabb.  T. B. I Headley, D.  C. Young, and D. C. Talley were witnesses.  John Tate was Probate Clerk of Rankin County.  William H. Shelton, R. A. Patrick, Charles Lynch, L. D. W. Connely, and Thomas B. J. Hadley were involved.  On 24 Oct 1840, William Smith, R. A. Martin, William Burns, J. J. McRae, and Robert G. Crozier received $10,079.35 in kind payment from H. K. Moss of 1560 acres in Rankin County known as the Prairie Branch Plantation, including all equipment, cattle, horses, mules, and slaves, plus 2760.2 acres more.  The slaves on that plantation were Eliza, Little Lewis, Reuben, Rachel, Tom Coffee, Peter Coffee, Little Tom, Madison, James, Yellow Eliza, Jack, Big Betsy, Lucy Graves, Lucy Coffee, Violet Coffee, Isaac Coffee, Tabia, Yellow Jane, Amanda, Lucinda, Louisa, Phillip, Charles Runnels, Billy, Caston, Major, Mack, George, Henry, Silas, Little Margaret, Mary, Martha, Jiles, Judy, Rutha, Anna, Harriet, Lizza, Sim, Little Sarah, Richard, Mary Ann, and Lucy.

Finally, in December 1842 in Rankin and Hinds Counties, an agreed order was signed by Judge John H. Rollins finalizing all of the above loans, payments, and transfers, for a case that began in 1835, and involves 3 courts, 3 judges, and numerous twists and turns and attorneys.
