This is from the diary of Mary Gus Barrett, Hinds County, MS.
A chicken agreement entered into by Mrs. T.H.W. Barrett and William O. (Oliver) Barrett, on Saturday March 22, 1884. The terms of the agreement are these:
William O. Barrett shall not have over six hens at time, two of which he has bought from Mrs. T.H.W. Barrett at .25 or or .50 for the two and for which he is to pay either in cash, or in eggs at .15 per dozen.
2nd. All the eggs bought of said William O. Barrett, by Mrs. T.H.W. Barrett, shall be sold by him to Mrs. T.H.W. Barrett at 15 cts per dozen without privilege of raising price at Christmas or other times and she shall have the preference of all others in buying eggs.
3rd. Any time the aformentioned Mrs. T.H.W. Barrett wishes to rent a hen, for setting and raising chickens, from said William O. Barrett, he shall agree to said on being paid the sum of .10.
4th. Whereas, the said chicken agreement entered into by parties above mentioned shall continue for six months and at the end of that time if Mrs. T.H.W. Barrett William O. Barrett wishes William O. Barrett to withdraw from the agreement he shall sell, or otherwise dispose of all his hens.
5th. During the six months that the chicken agreement shall last William O. Barrett shall neither raise or nor own any other kind of poultry whatever.
