 REV. BENJAMIN WHITFIELD FAMILY CEMETERY
Contributed by Mary Collins Landin 7-4-05

Located:  In woods near Green Crossing, MS, between Jackson and Pocahuntas (S24T7NR1W).
Recorded:  By Mary Collins Landin, on 15 Apr 1979
First Grave:  1828

Remarks:  This old family cemetery was restored by the Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission in 1978, after many years of abandonment by the Whitfield Family.  The cemetery is now maintained by the Mississippi Baptist Convention.  They erected a historic marker which reads:

"He was a pioneer Baptist preacher who settled in Hinds County.  He served as pastor of Union Church, as vice president of the Mississippi Baptist Convention when it was organized in 1836, became resident in 1839, serving four years and became a member of the Board of Trustees when the Convention took control of Mississippi College in 1850.  He served on the Board until his death in 1872, serving 16 of the 22 years as President of the Board.  Whitfield, his wife, and eight children are buried here".
