Margaret Abigail Walker Alexander was born July 7, 1915 in
Birmingham Jefferson County Alabama.Author. Using her maiden name, Margaret Walker, as her pen name, Alexander published works in almost every genre. She is perhaps best known for "Jubilee", her widely acclaimed novel based on her own family's experiences in the years during and after slavery, and for her poetry, including the prize-winning "For My People." Alexander grew up in Birmingham, attended undergraduate school at Northwestern University and graduate school at the University of Iowa, and taught for more than thirty years in the English Department of Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi. in Jackson Hinds County Mississippi.
