With Barbara, what you saw really was what you got.....
Folks around here knew that with Barbara Daigre, “what you see is was what you get.” That’s how she signed off the column she wrote for The Daily Star. Daigre, 84, died Friday at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, and funeral services were held Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Grenada. Although she was never elected to public office, Daigre was involved deeply in civic and service work in Grenada.
She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Green Thumb Garden Club, Order of the Eastern Star, DAV, the XYZ Club of the First United Methodist Church, and the Pilot Club of Grenada. She was a former employee of The Daily Star, the Grenada County Weekly and the Union Planters Bank. As her readers know, Daigre was a graduate of Wood Junior College, and after graduation entered the United States Navy serving as a WAVE for two years.
She was presented the “Book of Golden Deeds” by the Grenada Exchange Club, and has been honored for her work to restore the Yellow Fever Cemetery. She was also instrumental in establishing Grenada’s First Historical Museum. Daigre was also the first President of the Mississippi Archaeology Society and was a frequent speaker to school children about the Indians in the Grenada area.
Daigre liked to close her columns with the old, universal printer’s symbol for the end.
Today, we’ll sign off for her.
