Biography - George Willoughby Martin
This biography was submitted by Jeff Davis. Notes are that George Willoughby Martin wrote this biography as part of a board requesting a commission in the United States Army in the 1880s. Below is the bio selection dealing with his early years:
I have the honor to submit the following brief history of my life.
I was born on the 17th February 1859 at Grenada Mississippi. I am the grandson of Colonel Geo. W. Martin, of Englewood Plantation, Miss. and the eldest son of Andrew Jackson, Martin and Mary Griffith Warfield of Grenada, Miss. [Not to be confused with George Willoughby Martin’s mother, Mary Barr Warfield, of Lexington, KY.]
I lived on the plantation until I was six years of age without an opportunity of obtaining an education. My father died in 1865. After his death my mother with myself and three other children moved to Memphis, Tennessee. In 1867, my mother was married to Lieut. Col. W. C. Bayley, of Chicago Ill. After this marriage, we moved to Selma, Arkansas. Remained at this place until 1870. We then returned to Grenada, Miss. In 1871, I was sent to school at Jackson, Miss. where I remained one year.
We will be adding to this biography as it develops.
