1st Mississippi Infantry (Johnson's) Company D, DeSoto Greys

The DeSoto Grays were formed at Hernando, MS, on or about August 24, 1861.  They were mustered into Confederate service on September 19, 1861 for twelve months at Iuka, MS.  Their first captain was W. J. A. Boone.  The regiment re-enlisted on September 24, 1862 for two more years or the war.

The First Mississippi Infantry Regiment was completed in August 1861 and ordered into camp of instruction at Iuka. The First was one of the four regiments sent by Governor Pettus to Kentucky to reinforce Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston near Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The First Mississippi were then sent to Fort Donelson, Tennessee early in February 1862. During the battle the First had a total of 331 in battle; casualties 16 killed and 61 wounded. The regiment then became prisoners of war until exchanged. Some escaped and joined other commands.

The members of the First were exchanged by October 1862. By January 7, 1863 they were in the trenches at Port Hudson, Louisiana. The regiment was surrendered with the garrison July 8. This surrender, like the previous one at Fort Donelson, was unconditional, but according to an informal agreement, the non-commissioned officers and enlisted men were paroled. During the fighting the regiment had 45 killed at Port Hudson, including Capt. George M. Moseley, Adjutant G. F. Simonton, and Lieuts. M. L. Mobley, J. M. Greer and J. M. Rhyne, and 53 wounded.

On February 29, 1864, the commanding officer of the First Mississippi Infantry was ordered to report with his regiment as infantry for assignment to Featherston's Brigade. In the army returns of July 31, 1864, the regiment, Major Alcorn commanding, was listed with Featherston's Brigade in Georgia. They were involved in the flank movement to Spring Hill, then the assault upon the entrenched line at Franklin, Tennessee. From Franklin they marched to Nashville and took in that battle in early December 1864. The return of December 21 showed an aggregate present of 67. The First Mississippi was surrendered with the remainder of General Joe Johnston's army on April 26, 1865 near Durham Station, North Carolina and paroled at Greensboro.

Because the regiment was surrendered twice, at Ft. Donelson, TN on February 16, 1862 and Port Hudson, LA on July 9, 1863, the muster records are very sparse.  Muster rolls are existent for August 27, 1861 – August 27, 1862 (one card), January & February 1863, March & April 1864, July & August 1864, and August 31, 1864 – February 28, 1865 (one card).  These are supplemented by Union prisoner and parole records.  Nevertheless, the gaps in coverage are quite broad.  For a number of men listed as having served in Company D, there were no records at all, and details of their service (if any) is unknown.
