Rutland Cemetery

Located in R6W, T1S, Sec. 20 south of the Mississippi/Tennessee State Line Road, ½ mile east of Germantown road and 1 mile east of Mineral Wells.  Surveyed in the 1980s.  Additional information added by Tim Harrison.



Allen Rutland – 10 Dec 1813 – 3 Jan 1869.
Born in North Carolina, he married Susan C. Bruce (see below) on September 7, 1841 in Shelby County, Tennessee.  They were the parents of seven known children: Martha J. (1843), Nancy (1847), John (see below), Sallie B. (see below), Emma A. (see below), Laura Allen (see below), Wallace W. (see below).  They are listed in the 1850 (p. 196), 1860 (p. 368), 1870 (p. 302), and 1880 (p. 257) Shelby County, Tennessee Census records.  Allen is believed to have served in Co. B, 46th Mississippi Infantry, CSA.

Susan C. Rutland – 23 July 1826 - .  Wife of Allen Rutland.
Born Susan C. Bruce (spelled “Brue” in the marriage license index) in Alabama, the daughter of John B. (born in VA, d. before 1830) and Nancy G. Bruce (1800, VA – 1854, TN).  She married Allen Rutland (see above) in Shelby County, Tennessee on September 7, 1841.  She was the mother of seven known children (see above).  Daughter, Martha J., married Thomas Roberts (1866) and daughter, Nancy “Nannie” W., married George R. Tuggle (1869).  Susan died between 1880 – 1900.

Emma A. Rutland – 24 Nov 1854 – 18 Nov 1856.

John Rutland – 3 Oct 1849 – 18 Sept 1858.
Son of Allen Rutland and Susan C. Bruce (see above).  Listed in the 1850 Shelby County, TN Census (p. 196).

Laura A. Rutland – 7 Feb 1860 – 3 Apr 1873.
Daughter of Allen Rutland and Susan C. Bruce (see above).  Listed in the 1860 (p. 368) and 1870 (p. 302) Shelby County, TN Census records.

Wallace W. Rutland – 23 Jan 1865 – 23 Oct 1888.
Son of Allen Rutland and Susan C. Bruce (see above).  Listed in the 1870 (p. 302) and 1880 (p. 257) Shelby County, TN Census records.

Nannie Morgan Pope – Age 19 years. – 30 ___ 1852.  Wife of Drew H. Pope.
She was born Nancy Morgan Buster about 1833 in Alabama, the daughter of Walter Leake Bruce (see below) and Mrs. Nancy G. Bruce 1800, VA – 1854, TN).  She married Drew H. Pope (b. 1828, TN) on September 18, 1850.  Interestingly, she appears to be the Nancy Pope listed in the 1850 Shelby County, TN Census (p. 196) as 16 years of age and is living with her mother, Nancy G. and step-father, William Williams.  On the same page are Rutlands.  The census page is dated December 14, 1850 but her husband is not listed.  Three siblings are also listed: Walter L. Buster (14, AL), John D. Buster (12, AL) and James C. Buster (10, AL).  A fourth sibling, Samuel Buster (b. 1831, AL), is listed in the 1850 DeSoto Census (p. 369).  Nannie’s husband was a Confederate soldier, serving in Co. K, 9th Mississippi Regiment.  Her brothers, Walter L. and John D., were also Confederate soldiers.  Walter served in Hudson’s Battery and John in Co. L, 28th Mississippi Cavalry.  No children are known to have been born to Nannie and Drew.

Mary M. Ellis – 15 Dec 1845 – 10 Aug 1853.  Daughter of B. R. & S. A. Ellis.
Born in Shelby County, TN, she was the daughter of Benjamin R. Ellis (b. @1813, VA) and Sarah A. Bruce (b. @1824, AL, daughter of John B. & Nancy G. Bruce), who married on August 27, 1840 in Limestone County, Alabama.  She is listed in the 1850 Shelby County, TN Census (p. 196).  The family is listed in the 1860 Shelby County Census (p. 368) and the 1870 (p. 292).  Walter L. Buster is living with them, and John D. Buster and James C. Buster are listed just below.  Her siblings included: Adlophus B. (b. @1842, AL), William W. (b. @1844, AL), Laura (b. @1848, TN), Robert E. (b. @1850, TN), Benjamin (b. @ 1853, TN), and unnamed infant (see below), Susan A. (b. @1857, TN), Erma Lilla (b. 1860, TN), Leonidas (b. @1862, TN), and Ella (b. @1865, TN).

Infant Ellis – 14 July 1855 – 21 July 1855.  Son of B. R. & S. A. Ellis.
Born in Shelby County, TN, he was the son of Benjamin R. Ellis and Sarah A. Bruce, who married on August 27, 1840 in Limestone County, Alabama.

Walter Leake Buster – 15 July 1795 -  .
Born in Virginia, he was the second husband of Mrs. Nancy G. Bruce (maiden name unknown, b. 1800, VA – d. 1854, TN).  They married in Madison County, Alabama on February 12, 1830 and were the parents of five known children: Samuel M. Buster (1831, AL), Nancy Morgan (see above, married Drew H. Pope), Walter L. (1836, AL), John D. (1838, AL), and James C. (1840, AL).  He died in 1840.  He is reputedly a veteran of the War of 1812.  After his death, his widow married William S. Williams (b. @1795, KY) on January 22, 1846 in Memphis, TN.

William Wallace Bruce – No dates.
Born about 1822, most likely in Alabama, he was the son of John B. Bruce (b. VA, died before 1830) and Nancy G. (1800, VA – 1854, TN).  (His mother later married Walter L. Buster (see above) and then William S. Williams).  His siblings were Sarah Ann Bruce and Susan C. Bruce, who married Allen Rutland (see above).  He died in Shelby County, Tennessee between March and December 1844, when his Will was probated.
