Located in R8W, T4S, Sec. 16 on property owned by Edward Sharp in 1983. It was located at the south end of Airport road, south off Wheeler road. Additional information added by Tim Harrison.
William G. Merritt – 1824 – 1867.
William Grant Merritt was born in North Carolina, the son of William (b. 1786, NC) and Elizabeth Merritt (1790, NC). He married Jane E. Brooks (b. 1830, NC) on January 2, 1850 in Chatham County, NC. They are listed with his parents in the census (p. 484). He and his family are also listed in the 1860 Chatham Census (p. 16) with the following children: Elizabeth (1852), Rufus (1856) and Mary (1858). The family moved to Mississippi by 1864. The 1870 DeSoto Census (p. 220) shows Jane with the above children and one other: Sallie, 6, MS. Jane died 26 January 1873.
