Bledsoe Family Cemetery

Near State Line Road and Tchulahoma Road, South of State Line and East of Tchulahoma.  Located in R7W, T1S, Sec. 21.  Surveyed in March 1983 by Roland I Lyons.  Additional information added by Tim Harrison.


Mary Bledsoe Flinn – 1828 – 1853.  Wife of William Wright Flinn.
Born in Alabama, daughter of Benajamin and Permelia Bledsoe (see below).  Married William W. Flinn on April 5, 1847 in DeSoto County.  They had one known child, Elizabeth, (1860 census p. 211, 1870 p. 96A), born about 1853.

Infant Flinn – No dates.

Rebecca P. Flinn – No dates.
Cannot locate in census records.

Mary Flinn – No dates.
Cannot identify from census records.

Permelia Bledsoe – 1799 – 1875.
Born Permelia Grimes in Kentucky.  Married Benjamin Bledsoe (b. in Kentucky about 1796) on April 5, 1820 in Fayette Co., KY.  Listed in 1820 Cumberland Co., KY Census (p. 158), 1830 Madison County, AL Census (p. 112), and 1840 DeSoto County Census (p. 117) with 11 children.  Listed in 1850 Census (p. 403B) with four children at home: B. (m), (28, AL, Physician), P. (f) (13, AL), L. (f) (11, MS), and C. (Caroline, 9, MS).  Husband, Benjamin, died about 1865.  Permelia is listed in the 1870 Census (p. 13), with daughter, Caroline.  Other children were Enoch, Mary (married W. W. Flinn, see above), Julia (married I. I. Farrow), Nancy (married Robert L. Flinn),

Benjamin Bledsoe – 1850.
Probably the B. Bledsoe listed in the 1850 DeSoto Census (p. 424) as 1 year old.  Son of E. (27, KY) and M. (27, TN) Bledsoe, and grandson of Benjamin and Permelia Bledsoe.

S. H. Rodgers – 1781 – 1854.
Samuel H. Rodgers, born in South Carolina.  Listed in the 1850 Shelby Co., TN census (p. 202B).  Son, Charles (b. abt 1824, AL) and his family were living in DeSoto County in 1860 (p. 114). 

Martha E. Rodgers – 1790 – 1858.
Born in South Carolina.  Wife of Samuel H. Rodgers (see above)

Edward Lee Van Hook – 1861 – 1893.  Son of John Henry and Sarah Ann Van Hook.
Born in Shelby Co., TN 28 Feb 1864 (I belive the tombstone was read incorrectly).

Sarah Ann Van Hook – 1825 – 1890.  Wife of John Henry Van Hook.
Born Sarah Ann Bledsoe on September 15, 1825 in TN.  Married John Henry Van Hook 1818, NC – 1868, TN) on October 3, 1844 in Shelby Co., TN.  The couple was listed in Shelby County in the 1850 (p. 205) and 1860 (p. 374) census records.  The had the following children:  Isaac Henry (1847 – 1849), William Brown (1849 – 1911), Elizabeth (1849 – may be the same as Nancy Elizabeth; however, listed in 1850 census as twin of William), Nancy Elizabeth (1852 – 1907), Robert Benjamin (1854 – 1895), Margaret Jane (see below), Mary Bledsoe (see below), John Henry, Jr. (1860 – 1947), Stonewall Jackson (1862 – 1925), Edward Lee (see above), Mittie Choate (1867 – 1906).  John died on February 16, 1868.  Sarah and children are listed in the 1870 (p. 323) and 1880 (p. 301) Shelby County Census records.  She died July 9, 1890.  Children William B., Robert B., John H., Jr., and Stonewall Jackson Van Hook are all buried in Edmondson Cemetery, DeSoto County.

Maggie Van Hook – 1857 – 1875.  Daughter of John and Sarah Van Hook.

Mary Van Hook – 1859 – 1886.  Daughter of John and Sarah Van Hook.

Nancy S. Anderson – 1825 – 1844.  Wife of John Anderson.
Cannot identify in the census records.
