Harrisons in DeSoto County: 1840 – 1880 By Tim Harrison The following list of Harrisons is taken strictly from the census records. DeSoto became a county in 1836, so the first U.S. Census to be taken in the county occurred in 1840. At that time there were 2 Harrison families enumerated. As each new census came about there were more. In 1870 the census takers included white and black families. In 1873 DeSoto County was split at roughly the Coldwater River, with the southern portion becoming Tate County. Therefore, in 1880 the number of Harrisons in the census dropped. Some records were hard to read so errors may have been made in the transcription. 1840 Census: Only the head of household was listed by name. The others were listed by sex/age as follows: under 5, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, etc. D. M. Harrison, p. 106: 00001001 – 00020001. 1850 Census: Every person in the household was listed for the first time. The county was divided into two Divisions, Northern and Southern. Page 314B S. Div.
