Grant # 1 Cemetery

Grant # 1 Cemetery, a family cemetery, is located off Holly Grove Lane, in northwest Copiah County, just south of Carpenter, Mississippi. The cemetery, located in a stand of hardwood trees, is no longer in use, with the last burial in the 1860s. Originally, the cemetery had a brick retaining wall. The size of the cemetery is approximately 36' x 63'. In addition to the six grave markers found, there was evidence of additional burials.

DIRECTIONS: (1) From Natchez Area: Take US 61 to Port Gibson; turn right on MS 18 for 18 miles to intersection of Miles Station Road (on the left) and Shelby Road (on the right); turn right on Shelby Road and continue for 3.2 miles; turn left on Holly Grove Lane for 2.9 miles to the entrance of the Molly Conn Place, a private hunting reserve. Grant # 1 Cemetery is located about ½ mile from the entrance to the private, posted property. Permission to enter the property is required. Walk to the equipment shed; take the road to the right for approx. 350-400 yards; the cemetery is located about 200 yards on the left. (2) From Jackson Area: Take MS 18 to Utica; continuing to and through Carpenter, Mississippi, to Shelby Road, which is two miles south of Carpenter, immediately after crossing Big Bayou Pierre bridge; follow directions above. (3) From Vicksburg Area: Taken MS 27 to Utica, Mississippi; continue on MS 18 toward Port Gibson and follow directions in # 1 and 2 above.

In some instances, a wife's grave stone has the maiden name and a citation that she is the wife of "X". Where such occurs, two entries have been made, one with the maiden name and the other with the married name.
