23rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment

Information on this page comes from various sources.  Co. A came from the Tishomingo Co. MSGenWeb page and was added to what I had.  The CC of the Tishomingo and Alcorn Co. pages is Bobbie Brewer Wilson who gave permission for its use here.  Data from this company may not be used for anything other than personal research without her permission.  Information on company D and E comes mainly from Martin L. Sandy, Jr. and is used here by permission.  It may not be used for anything other than personal research without his permission.  Some of the information comes from the Tippah Co. Historical Society publications and from Confederate cemeteries on the web. The list was further expanded from a list found in the Mississippi State Archives and copied by Bobby Mitchell. The roll of honor information came from the Official Records. Biographical data came mainly from cemetery records of Tippah and Benton Counties and a few from Union Co. Some information was submitted by decendants.

This unit was first known as the 2nd (Davidson's), then the 3rd.  The designation was officially changed to the 23rd by special order number 228, 19 Nov. 1861 and is the designation it is more commonly known by.  With the exception of three companies from Tishomingo and one from Pontotoc, this regiment was made up of Tippah County men.  The regiment was surrendered at Ft. Donelson 16 Feb. 1862.  They were exchanged and reorganized in September 1862.  It was in the battle of Coffeeville Dec. 5., 1862.  It later participated in the Vicksburg campaign but was not included in the surrender of July 4.  Still later it was part of the army of Tennessee and participated in the Georgia and Tennessee campaigns (Atlanta, Franklin, Nashville).  After July 1863 it was commanded by Major George W. B. Garrett, Colonel Wells being unable to exercise command because of poor health and Lieutenant Colonel McCarley having been captured.

The Adjutant General sent Gov. John J. Pettus a much outdated report Colonel Davidson had been dead a year and a half) on the Mississippi regiments in the service of the Confederate States 1 Nov. 1863 which included the 2nd regiment, later the 3rd and finally the 23rd.

Second Regiment:* Colonel, T. J. Davidson; lieutenant-colonel, J. M. Wells; major, John R. Duvall. Falkner Guards, Captain R. I. Hill; Molino Rifles; Captain E. M. Wells; Tippah Tigers, Captain P. Holcombe; Tippah Riflemen, Captain M. M. Corley; Blount Guards, Captain C. G. Blount; Kossuth Hunters, Captain R. B. Allen; Blackland Gideonites, Captain ------ ------; Plenitude Invincibles, Captain ------- ------; Thompson Invincibles, Captain J. H. Kennedy; Stubbs Rifles, Captain R. R. Knight. Whole number, including field and staff officers, 737 men.

Notes:
[1] There is an M.B. Duff buried in buried New Harmony Cem., Union Co., no dates
[2] There is a J.M. Carpenter, 22 Sept 1844 - 16 Apr 1915 buried Dumas Cemetery, Tippah Co.
[3] There is a 1st Lt. William L. Ganong, Co. K 2nd Miss. Inf., 08-30-1835 to 10-28-1861, buried Jamestown Cemetery, Jamestown, MS. Perhaps this is a memorial. The 23rd was first known as the 2nd, then the 3rd and finally the 23rd Miss. Infantry.
[4] Telenieus Harrison Collier's stone says 2nd Miss. Inf. The NPS Soldiers and Sailors system say he was in the 2nd Miss. Inf. Army of 10,000 which I believe to have been the 23rd while it was called the 2nd under Col. Davidson.
[P] From Pontotoc Co.
