Galvanized Yankee
Late in the war
Confederate prisoners were offered freedom and
promised that they would not have to fight the
south if they would enlist in the Union Army.
They were sent out west to fight Indians
instead. Those who accepted were called
"galvanized Yankees" and since this freed a
Union soldier to fight the south were generally
considered traitors.
