Submitted by Delores Sanders, August 27, 1999

Note: There are 3 unmarked graves and 1 marked with a metal funeral home marker. One of these unmarked graves is reported to contain the remains of Magnus Simerson Teague b. 1 Jan, 1805 and another to contain grave of Jane B. Davis w/o Magnus, b. 1806. Magnus S. Teague married Jane B. Davis, said to be a niece of Jefferson Davis; understand her father was Samuel Davis of Ala. In 1816 a Magnus Teague is listed in Madison Co., Ala.; in Lawrence Co., Ala. Marriage Book I, 19 Sept, 1822 Magnus S. Teague and Jane B. Davis. They are said to have come to Attala Co., Ms. soon thereafter. Samuel Davis was opposed to his daughter's marriage as he was a wealthy planter with many slaves and Magnus S. Teague was young and poor, but Teague vowed to give his bride three slaves for every one her father owned and after settling in Attala Co., he did, becoming a very wealthy man, owning slaves, plantations, a ferry (on Big Black River), a tavern, etc. For his wife he built a beautiful mansion of brick but this was burned many years ago. He is said to have built the home now owned by Chatwin M. Jackson Jr. for one of his daughters, who married Col. Coffee. Another daughter married William Dodd, pioneer Attala Co., Ms. settler who helped name Kosciusko. Dodd was the grandson of Rev. soldier John Dodd.
