This cemetery was known as the "Curtis Family
Cemetery" for about 60 years.
On 14 Jul 1851, John Curtis purchased this land from Morgan L. Fitch who was
from Holmes Co.Ms. It wasn't until 3 July 1913 that William Ira Canon deeded one
acre of land for the use of Friendship Cemetery.
The first grave was that of a female slave and her child. They both died during
childbirth and were buried in the same casket. The next grave was probably that
of John Curtis who died between 1856-1860.
In about 1960 Ernest Strain and a number of the deceased family members replaced
the native rocks with named markers that were located to the best of their
knowledge.
From about 3 July 1913 until the present time the cemetery has been known as
"Friendship Methodist". The church is located 1/4 mile north of the cemetery
just across the Montgomery Co. line. Two older Friendship Cemeteries are located
about 1½ miles north of the present site.
